Martin AmlinMartin Amlin’s music is characterized by pungent tonality and high rhythmic energy. His Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra was premiered by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and his compositions have been performed by such artists as the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, the John Oliver Chorale, the Webster Trio, and other prominent ensembles. He has had commissions from the Seattle Flute Society, the Chicago Flute Club, Pacific Serenades, ALEA III, the James Pappoutsakis memorial flute competition, pianist Andrew Willis, and clarinetist Michael Webster.His Sonata for Piccolo and Piano won the National Flute Association’s newly-published music competition; other awards include grants from the NEA, Tanglewood Music Center, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Massachusetts Artists Foundation, St. Botolph Club Foundation, and Massachusetts Council for the Arts. He has received an ASCAP Grant to Young Composers and many ASCAP Standard Awards. He has been a resident at Yaddo, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the MacDowell Colony.Mr. Amlin studied with Nadia Boulanger at the Écoles d’Art Américaines in Fontainebleau and the École Normale de Musique in Paris. He received M.M. and D.M.A. degrees as well as a Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied piano with Frank Glazer and composition with Joseph Schwantner, Samuel Adler, and Warren Benson.Formerly an instructor at the Phillips Exeter Academy and an Affiliate Artist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Martin Amlin is currently Associate Professor of Theory and Composition at Boston University. He has been rehearsal pianist for the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and the Boston Pops Orchestra, and has appeared as soloist with the Pops on many occasions. He has also performed on the FleetBoston Celebrity Series and the International Artists Series, and has been pianist for the M.I.T. Experimental Music Studio and the New England Ragtime Ensemble. He has appeared frequently live on Boston’s WGBH radio station as both performer and composer, and has given the world premiere of many new pieces. Martin Amlin has recorded for the Hyperion, Koch International, Centaur, Crystal, Titanic, Opus One, Folkways, Ashmont, and Wergo labels.
