Charlier Etudes No. 1-36
Charlier Etudes No. 1-36
Theo Charlier
In 1925, Theo Charlier published his 36 Études Transcendentes with Buffon-Crampon Publishers in Liège, Belgium. Based on his orchestral and teaching experiences he felt the need to provide himself and his students with pedagogical materials to propel them to higher levels of technical and musical proficiency. He was living, playing and teaching in a very electrified musical world. When he published the Etudes Transcendantes, it was less than ten years after the 1913 premiere of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" and composers were constantly presenting musicians with bolder requirements. That he succeeded in his aims is beyond doubt. This collection of etudes has been studied by trumpet players for nearly 100 years and they are as relevant now as when they first appeared. He wrote them with the Bb trumpet in mind as that was more preferred in Belgium at that time than the C trumpet, which was more popular in Paris. After Charlier's death (1944) the etudes were acquired by Alphonse Leduc in Paris. For unknown reasons they changed the order of the etudes and these remain the numbers in use today.
