Modulation, by Jeff Queen, is a solo for snare drum that focuses on the challenges of encountering similar rhythms in different meters. Written in sonata form, the piece explores the basic meters of 4/4, 6/8, and 3/4, while working through the formal devices of exposition, development, and recapitulation. The 3/4 section is fast, felt in “one”, and would provide a nice challenge for a player not used to reading rhythms in that sort of feel. This solo demands a basic command of flams, diddles, rolls, and height/volume control, and should be accessible to the average intermediate to advanced marching or concert percussionist.This piece ships as a printed, professionally bound folio with a full-color cover.
